Meaning of Shiv Ji ki Aarti

O Shiva, glory to you! Omkara, glory to you! May Vishnu, Brahma, and the entire pantheon of gods, including Lord Shiva, heal my ailments!

You play the roles of all three Gods – Vishnu, Brahma, and Shiva – as the Absolute, True Being, Consciousness, and Bliss. You have four faces as Brahma, one as Vishnu, and five as Shiva. You all make everyone happy who sees you. As Brahma, you prefer to ride on the back of a swan; as Vishnu, you sit on the back of Garuda and as Shiva, you ride on the sacred bull, all of these are ready. O Great Shiva, please remove my afflictions!

You have two arms as Brahma, four as Vishnu, and ten as Shiva (Dashabaahu), all of which are breathtakingly beautiful. The inhabitants of the three worlds are all enchanted as soon as they see you. O great Lord Shiva, please remove my afflictions.

You are, O great Lord, wearing a garland of Rudraksha, another of skulls, and a third of forest flowers; your forehead is smeared with sandal paste and musk, glistening in the moonlight which it holds. Please help me to be free of my ailments.

O great Lord Shiva, your body is dressed in yellow and white clothes and tiger skin, and you are accompanied by gods such as Brahma, troops of goblins, and divine seers such as Sanaka. Please help me to be free of my ailments.

You hold akamandalu (the mendicants’ water-jar) in one hand and a trident in the other; you destroy all distress, bring happiness to all, and sustain the entire universe, O great Lord Shiva, may you cure me of all my ailments!

The ignorant recognize Vishnu, Brahma, and Shiva as separate gods, but they are all fused into a single mystic syllable ‘OM.’ Please help me be free of my ailments.

“He who recites this Arti of the god the three Gunas— rajas, satta, and tamas—achieves fulfillment of his heart’s desire,” says Swami Shivananda. May you, O great Lord Omkara, heal my afflictions.
