Lakshmi Ji Ki Aarti – Doorway to Luxury, Prosperity, and Abundance

I vividly recall reciting Goddess Lakshmi Ji ki aarti during Diwali night amidst the sounds of crackers and the illuminating light of beautiful diyas. On every Diwali, all family members return to their hometown to celebrate this joyful festival and share happy moments together. During the night we all gather in the verandah of the house and perform Lakshmi ji ki aarti while ringing bells, moving aarti thaal, clapping hands, and chanting the lyrics loud and clear. The entire house gets filled with divinity and devotion. Certainly, this is the story of most households in India. Being the goddess of abundance, she is worshipped with a lot of love and enthusiasm in Indian households. Each day, millions of people, across India, worship this deity. Moreover, her prowess is not only limited to India, she has followers all over the globe. Today through this blog, we will try to understand the significance, importance, and the right way to perform Lakshmi Ji ki aarti. But, before that, let us know more about the Goddess Lakshmi. Who she is? What does she represent? Why do people worship her?

Who is Goddess Lakshmi?

Known for her grace, beauty, and wealth, Goddess Lakshmi is one of the most prominent goddesses in Hinduism. Whilst there are several traits linked to her, she is significantly seen as the Goddess of fortune, wealth, joy, and beauty. Besides being considered a significant part of the tridevi trinity, along with Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Parvati, she is thought to be the embodiment of the planet Venus. She has been seen protecting Lord Vishnu in his various avatars during crucial points of time when he needed support in developing the universe. She is perhaps best known for her role in Hinduism as the deity who controls material wealth.

The image of Goddess Lakshmi looks truly divine and powerful, she is depicted either sitting or standing on the lotus flower with two other lotus flowers in her hands. In Hindu culture, the lotus flower is considered an epitome of virtue, self-realisation, and purity. Found in various parts of India; these flowers can thrive even under the cruellest conditions, withstanding droughts and air pollution. In spirituality, they symbolise how good thrives over evil without getting adversely affected. Holding two lotus flowers in each outstretched hand, Goddess Lakshmi remains graceful and listens to her devoted husband Lord Vishnu whom she loves unconditionally for all eternity.

Much like the classical depictions of Hindu Gods and Goddesses, she is also shown with her four arms extended. This is representing the four virtues that Hindus strive for, including, Dharma (the pursuit of a moral and ethical life), Artha (achievement of prosperity and wealth), Kama (emotional love and fulfilment) and  Moksha (the quest for freedom and self-realization). In images, she is depicted as sitting in the blue ocean (Kshira Sagar), her palms emitting gold coins, which are considered the symbol of prosperity and abundance.

Ghee and camphor have many qualities specific to their usage during an aarti ceremony for deities. Do you know what is so special about camphor or pure ghee? Why do we use them in aarti?

Let us understand both the spiritual and scientific aspects behind using camphor and ghee:

  • According to ancient Hindu scriptures, cow ghee is the purest and has a unique and sacred aura. It amplifies one’s aura and manifests positive energies in the surrounding. The positive energies created by lighting Diya or pure ghee engulf all the negativity. It magnifies the well-being of devotees and provides them with peace and serenity. Besides positive energy, burning ghee emits positive vibrations and extends peace and calmness in the thoughts and actions of devotees.
  • The vibrations from the ghee Diya can attract higher sattvik waves in the atmosphere. When these waves interact with our aura, our minds become calm and more focused. Additionally, these waves are very powerful and can enlighten the mind.
  • Burning camphor and ghee release a refreshing odour into the surroundings.
  • Plus, camphor also has incredible qualities, representing its usefulness in removing environmental toxins without causing damage to itself or other natural materials. Because of these qualities, people continue to recognize it as an essential aspect that promotes positive involvement with nature and self for the common goal of community progress.
  • Camphor brings fresh, cooling energy to the environment, making the home clean and welcoming. The smoke burns away the stale air surrounding you while refreshing your creativity and inviting new ideas to inspire you.
  • Moreover, camphor also has a fantastic property of burning clean without leaving any trace – a symbol that one must let go of their egos to benefit their spiritual progression.
