How are the old age homes for seniors in India?

India is a land of diverse cultures. And the beauty of the different cultures is the values we share. In Indian society, family members are more close-knit than in many other nations. A typical Indian household teaches younger generations to respect seniors. Even gathering old-age home information is stigmatised in Indian society.

1. Reasons why old age homes are increasing

In India, the joint family system was prevalent a few decades ago. It consisted of parents, grandparents, siblings, and their spouses and children, all of whom lived under one roof in a small town. Seniors who were then ageing did not have to worry about being taken care of because urbanisation had not yet fully affected the subcontinent. An Indian group called HelpAge India is the name of the organisation that set up old-age homes.

Migration is the most common reason behind the increasing number of old-age homes. As it is pretty natural to adjust to an experience you are unfamiliar with virtually your entire life, it can be challenging for seniors to adjust to their children’s new surroundings. Even if they adapt, they frequently experience extreme loneliness while the kids are away at school. Children in these situations feel that if their parents are with people their age, they will feel better and enjoy a fulfilling retirement.

1. The increasing trend of the nuclear family results in increasing old-age homes. As the times changed and newer possibilities emerged, kids began to leave their parents behind as the concept of nuclear families gained popularity. Additionally, the generation gap between the old and the young prevented seniors from accepting all of their children’s decisions, such as the fact that many still object to their daughter-in-law being an independent employee. Children feel there is hardly any choice but to relocate their parents from their homes due to the perpetual rift these problems cause in the family’s dynamics.

2. The safety issue is also a reason behind increased nursing homes. While many children leave their parents’ homes to pursue their education or careers, leaving their parents’ house alone, the primary concern for children will always be their parents’ protection. Homes with only senior citizens become targets for robbery and even murder. Children in these situations perceive old-age homes as safe.

2. Living Conditions in Old Age Homes

According to the “National Policy for Senior Citizens,” institutional care for senior citizens “should be seen as the last resort.” The “Integrated Programme for Old Persons” (IPOP), which supports the establishment and upkeep of old age homes, daycare centres, mobile medical units, regional resource & training centres, and the formation of senior citizen associations, is implemented by the MoSJE (Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment).

For the care of senior citizens, the States are required to create and manage “Old-Age Homes,” with at least one facility for 150 people being provided in each district. However, due to diverse socioeconomic circumstances, the demand for old-age homes is not distributed equally across the States/UTs.

3. Challenges of Old Age Homes

Old age homes’ most common challenge is finding the right one by lifestyle and budget. Adapting to new living arrangements and food may take some time and effort. While many senior living facilities—aside from a select few built for upper-middle-class residents—might not offer the same amenities and space that a person is used to, seniors might experience physical limitations. Moreover, it might be challenging to fit in with a new group of individuals as you age, leading to friction and conflict. Finally, some old-age facilities have been accused of abusing their residents, so seniors should exercise caution.

Senior folks’ welfare and safety must be prioritised above all else. Strategies and goals must be in line for reliable and comprehensive senior care to be provided. In this way, senior problems can be effectively addressed. Also, they should come out of the stereotype that staying in old age homes is a social stigma.
